Globology Ltd has pioneered safe, low-cost, ferry services for the residents of East Africa’s lake and coastal islands.
Our small catamaran passenger ferries provide the first link in the transportation network for isolated island residents who currently rely solely on unsafe canoes and dhows.
On Lake Victoria alone over 2500 people die annually, according to Lake Rescue on Lake Victoria, in poorly-maintained passenger canoes built of illegally-harvested hardwood with no safety equipment - not even lifejackets - or shelter from the weather. In addition to being unsafe these canoes are powered by highly–polluting 2-stroke outboard engines.
We provide a safe, comfortable and faster service for the same price as the canoes, or less. Our business model has been proved over the last 6 years by our prototype ferry which has carried over 500,000 passengers from the Kenyan island of Mageta to Usenge on the mainland.
Based on the success of our first route we have attracted investment from a Netherlands private equity fund which will enable us to roll-out a production run of 15 ferries over the next 5 years.
